How did the band decide on the name “The String Cheese Incident”? Many stories have been told by the band and fans about the origin of this name. I was searching around my Cheese library and came across a couple audio clips from the band discussing this very question. I am unsure the time or source of the Travis clip.

Below you can hear two stories, one from Billy and one from Travis:

Billy Nershi (2001-07-17 – Rockingham, NC):

What do you think? Which song was forever changed by Kang’s mandolin “string cheese” hitting Billy in the face?
What is the real origin of “The String Cheese Incident”?

  1. The Blue String Cheese Incident Band was a cool name too especially for those who love Blue String Cheese dressing on their vegetables. You guys make me laugh. Going to the LAND’S END to find my dressing for this vegetable or I will BETRAY THE DARK and starve.
    Peace and light,
    Candy

At one point in time, I heard another version of the origin that stemmed from some incident eating pizza. I think it was Travis that ate a piece of pizza and had a “string” of cheese that stuck to his chin and remained there an entire day.

I also met Jason & Travis at a EOTO show and asked them once and they said if they told me they would have to kill me.

    It’s fun to think about!

at the wheeler opera house.. in 94.. the band was waiting for Phish to play….. sheriffs frisked the players looking for weed.. and found string cheese in one of their pockets.. it made headlines in aspen. … and hence the name of the band
